Venus and the Moon
©2004 Janis Carper

When I saw venus and the moon this morning
it was only half past five
walkin’ in the dew drenched dawn of August
makes you realize you’re alive
true, things could be better
things could be a lot worse
I been living in the land of winding waters
but it feels like I’m dying of thirst
everything you’d think I want
everything you’d think I need
but I’m singing this age-old love-sick song
just another habit to feed
that’s what I was thinking
looking up at Venus and the moon

When I saw Venus and the moon this morning
it was an hour before daylight
it’s a pity that nobody else around here
ever feels the edge of night
see how the star just hangs there
like a diamond marionette
man, that moon can sure pull some strings
I haven’t got that figured out yet
haven’t figured out a lot of things
spend a lot of time in the dark
but one thing that I know for sure
is the sound of my own heart
that’s what I was thinking
looking up at Venus and the moon

When I saw Venus and the moon this morning
made me believe there’s magic still
that there’s hope for this old worn-out life
a way, if there’s a will
maybe with the change of seasons
maybe with a little more time
maybe just a few more mornings like this
lookin’ up to the sky
maybe we still have a chance
to shine as bright and true
as those two heavenly bodies
just like Venus and the moon
that’s what I was thinking
lookin’ up at Venus and the moon
